紐約市為於紐約州的東南方，為哈德遜河(Hudson)的入海口，面積為約780平方公里。

紐約市共區分為五大行政區，曼哈頓(Manhattan)、布朗克斯(Bronx)、皇后區(Queens)、布魯克林(Brooklyn)和斯坦腾島(Staten Island)。

曼哈頓島長約21公里，寬3.2公里。人口約有150萬，在五個行政區中面積最小，但人口密度最高。
